Two week program
June 18 - 29, 2012

The Summer Ballet Intensive is for intermediate and advanced ballet students. The program stresses the highly structured Vaganova syllabus, and closely resembles the program of study adhered to in the former Soviet Union. The program runs all day, Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 3:30 PM. It includes daily ballet classes plus classes in other dance forms including character, yoga, historical dance and classical variations. Advanced classes will include pointe work and partnering. Seminars such as Ballroom, massage, costuming, and drama will also be presented. Students should bring a bag lunch.

IRINA KOMARENKO (pictured left) graduated from the Alma-Ata Ballet Academy, Kazahkstan and joined the world-renowned Donetsk Ballet as a soloist.  At the 1995 International Festival of Stars World of Ballet she received “The Hope of Ukrainian Ballet” diploma of recognition.  In 1993 at the same event she received the award of “High Mastership.” Komarenko has toured in Italy, France, Norway, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Canada, China and Switzerland.  In 1998 she was a Finalist in the USA International Ballet competition in Jackson, Mississippi, and in 2000 she received an award for being the best non-competing partner at Varna’s International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria.  She joined the Indianapolis Ballet in 1999.

YOSBEL DELGADO-HERNANDEZ - a native of Cuba, was hired by the Ballet Nacional de Cuba under the direction of Alicia Alonzo.  In 2002, he came to Philadelphia and continued his ballet career with the Pennsylvania Ballet for eight years where he danced many featured roles including the jester in Cinderella, chocolate and sugarplum cavalier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, Spanish dance and other roles in Swan Lake, pas de six in Taming of the Shrew, Dracula and other roles in the Firebird, peasant pas de deux in Giselle, pas de trois in Sleeping Beauty and many others.

SVETLANA ZHERDEVA was born in Russia. She received her choreographic education at the College of Culture and Arts in Perm, Russia. She performed with a few professional Dance Companies, was a Principal Dancer in the Stavropol Cossack's Dance Company. She has toured in Europe and the USA. In 2005 she received her diploma with Honors from Stavropol State Pedagogic University as a Professional Dance Teacher

DONALD LUNSFORD is currently the Artistic Director of Philadanco II.  A graduate of University of the Arts, he is on faculty there as well.  He is widely known as a master teacher and choreographer with a strong background in modern and jazz technique. Donald has been teaching at WDA’s summer intensive for the past ten years.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

On Friday, June 29, 2012 at 6PM, there will be a performance with selections from classical ballets and other choreography, showcasing the student’s progress during the two week program.  A reception will follow.

FEES:
$600 for 2 weeks
$325 for 1 week

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
A limited number of scholarships are available for the summer program. Contact the studio for information on how to apply for scholarship. Audition fee is $15.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is for students ages 10 - 22, with at least two years experience. Class placement in the program is on an individual basis and will be determined on the first day of the program. An audition is recommended, but not essential. The audition fee is $15. Students may submit a photograph in first arabesque and a letter of recommendation by a ballet teacher, in lieu of an audition. HOUSING
For students not within commuting distance, Wissahickon Dance Academy will find housing with families nearby. A fee of $110 per week will cover room and board.
