Three week program
July 26 - August 13, 2010

The Summer Ballet Intensive is for intermediate and advanced ballet students. The program stresses the highly structured Vaganova syllabus, and closely resembles the program of study adhered to in the former Soviet Union. The program runs all day, Monday through Friday from 9:30 - 5:00 PM. It includes two daily ballet classes plus classes in other dance forms including character, yoga, historical dance and classical variations. Advanced classes will include pointe work and partnering. Seminars such as Pilates, nutrition, massage, injury prevention, and drama will also be presented. Students should bring a bag lunch.

FACULTY

CLASSICAL BALLET TECHNIQUE

VIKTOR YELIOHIN Ballet Master, Choreographer and Teacher, was born in Tashkent in the former Soviet Union. He began his ballet studies in 1967. Upon graduation, he spent one year in Samarkant with the Ballet Master from the Kirov Ballet and performed solo roles from major ballets. Viktor studied the Vaganova Syllabus in Leningrad and at Gittis conservatory. He has been teaching children since 1985 and has been on staff at Wissahickon Dance Academy since 1992. In May of 1995 he received a diploma and the distinguished title of “Professor of Choreography” from the Academic Board of the Ukraine Academy of Dance in Kiev. Over the years, Viktor has maintained his connection to the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine. He choreographs the children’s roles for the Donetsk Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker which has been touring the eastern US annually since 1994.

ELENA TIURIAKULOVA graduated with excellence in 1975 from the world famous Vaganova Choreography School (Kirov School) in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received her practical training at the Mariinski Theater of Opera and Ballet. She became Principal Dancer at the Kygyz State Theater of Opera and Ballet, dancing the lead roles in all of the major ballets for twenty years. She received many honors including “Honored Artist of Ballet of the Kyrgyz Republic” in 1982 and “Laureate of the Prize of Youth Union of Kyrgyzstan for Excellence in performance” in 1980. Elena joined the WDA faculty in 2003.

On Aug. 13, 2010 there will be a performance consisting of variations from classical ballets. There will be a reception following the performance.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
A limited number of scholarships are available for the summer program. Contact the studio for information on how to apply for scholarship. Audition fee is $15.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is for students ages 10 - 22, with at least two years experience. Class placement in the program is on an individual basis and will be determined on the first day of the program. An audition is recommended, but not essential. The audition fee is $15. Students may submit a photograph in first arabesque and a letter of recommendation by a ballet teacher, in lieu of an audition. HOUSING
For students not within commuting distance, Wissahickon Dance Academy will find housing with families nearby. A fee of $110 per week will cover room and board.
